Moving from Shopify to WooCommerce

Stores leave Shopify for WooCommerce for the same few reasons: transaction fees, checkout restrictions, or the need for content and customisation that a hosted platform will not allow. The migration itself is a modelling change — Shopify's collections, three-option variants and platform customer accounts become WooCommerce's category trees, unlimited attribute variations and WordPress users.

Because WooCommerce runs on WordPress, this migration is also a hosting and content decision. We build on a staging WordPress install, migrate and validate there, and agree on themes, page building and SEO plugin setup (Yoast or Rank Math) before the store goes live.

Shopify's /products/ and /collections/ URL prefixes do not exist in WooCommerce, whose permalinks follow your chosen WordPress structure. We plan the permalink scheme first and cover every old Shopify URL with a 301 redirect.

What we migrate from Shopify to WooCommerce

  • Products

Titles, descriptions, SKUs, pricing, stock and weights into WooCommerce products.
  • Variants, options and attributes

Shopify option1/2/3 variants rebuilt as WooCommerce attributes and variations — with no three-option ceiling.
  • Categories

Shopify collections mapped into WooCommerce product categories and tags with a sensible hierarchy.
  • Images and media

Product and variant images imported into the WordPress media library with alt text.
  • Customers

Customer records and addresses as WordPress users; passwords need a reset flow after launch.
  • Orders and order history

Orders, line items, taxes, shipping and refunds migrated as WooCommerce orders.
  • Coupons and discounts

Shopify discount codes recreated as WooCommerce coupons, including usage limits.
  • Reviews and ratings

Migrated into native WooCommerce reviews or your chosen reviews plugin.
  • Pages and blog content

Shopify pages and blog posts become WordPress pages and posts, keeping publish dates.

Shopify to WooCommerce migration considerations

These are the differences that decide how your new store is structured. We settle each one with you during discovery, before any data moves.

Variant limits disappear — design still matters
WooCommerce allows unlimited attributes per product, so Shopify's three-option cap no longer constrains you. We still design the attribute structure deliberately so filtering, reporting and the admin stay usable.
Theme and page building are separate work
Your Shopify theme cannot be ported. Most stores choose a WooCommerce-ready theme and rebuild key pages with blocks or a page builder. We focus on the data and coordinate with whoever builds the design.
Apps become plugins
Every Shopify app you rely on — reviews, subscriptions, upsells, shipping — needs a WooCommerce plugin equivalent. We inventory apps during discovery and confirm the replacement before quoting.
Payments and checkout change hands
Shopify Payments does not travel. WooCommerce checkout, gateways, tax rules and shipping zones are configured and tested on staging, and we document any checkout behaviour that changes for customers.
Permalinks and redirects
We choose the WooCommerce permalink structure up front, keep slugs where possible, and generate a complete 301 redirect map from your Shopify /products/, /collections/, /pages/ and /blogs/ URLs.
Hosting, security and maintenance
Self-hosting WordPress means updates, backups and security become yours. We advise on hosting sized for your catalog and traffic, and make sure a rollback path exists before cutover.

Shopify to WooCommerce migration FAQ

Can WooCommerce handle products with more than three options?

Yes — WooCommerce has no practical attribute limit, so products that were constrained by Shopify's three-option rule can be modelled properly. We design the attribute groups during discovery so variations, filters and stock all behave sensibly.

Will my Shopify SEO rankings survive the move?

That is what the redirect plan is for. We keep slugs where the WooCommerce permalink structure allows, 301-redirect every old Shopify URL, and port your titles and meta descriptions into Yoast or Rank Math so pages do not launch with auto-generated metadata.

What happens to my Shopify apps and subscriptions?

App data is not part of the Shopify export, so we inventory every app during discovery and match it to a WooCommerce plugin. Subscription data usually needs a dedicated subscriptions plugin and, for billing, sometimes customer re-authorisation — we confirm what is possible before quoting.

How much downtime does the switch need?

Typically a short scheduled window. The bulk of the migration runs on a staging WordPress install while your Shopify store keeps selling; the cutover syncs the final orders and customers, then DNS points at the new store.
