Moving from Shopify to OpenCart

Shopify and OpenCart model a catalog very differently. Shopify uses collections, a fixed three-option variant model and platform-managed customer accounts; OpenCart uses a nested category tree, product options and option values, and its own customer and address tables. A straight CSV export rarely survives that gap, which is why we build an explicit field-level mapping before moving anything.

Because OpenCart is self-hosted, this migration is also a hosting decision. We work against a staging OpenCart install, migrate and verify there, then coordinate a short cutover window so your live Shopify store keeps selling until the final switch.

The part most stores underestimate is SEO. Shopify's /products/ and /collections/ URL prefixes do not exist in OpenCart, so every important URL needs a planned 301. We produce that redirect map as part of the migration rather than after launch.

What we migrate from Shopify to OpenCart

  • Products

Titles, descriptions, SKUs, pricing, weights and inventory into OpenCart products.
  • Variants, options and attributes

Shopify's option1/2/3 variants rebuilt as OpenCart options, option values and per-combination pricing.
  • Categories

Shopify collections (including manual ones) mapped into OpenCart's nested category tree.
  • Images and media

Product and variant images transferred and re-linked to the OpenCart image manager.
  • Customers

Customer records, addresses and groups — passwords cannot be carried across, so we plan a reset flow.
  • Orders and order history

Orders, line items, totals and statuses mapped to OpenCart order states.
  • Coupons and discounts

Shopify discount codes recreated as OpenCart coupons where the rule type exists.
  • Reviews and ratings

Migrated where they live in Shopify natively or in an app with an accessible export.

Shopify to OpenCart migration considerations

These are the differences that decide how your new store is structured. We settle each one with you during discovery, before any data moves.

Collections become a category tree
Shopify collections are flat and can be automated by rules. OpenCart expects a hierarchy. We agree on the target tree first and decide which automated collections become real categories and which become filters.
Variant model vs option model
Shopify caps you at three options per product and treats each combination as a variant with its own SKU and price. OpenCart applies options as price adjustments on a base product. We map SKUs carefully so inventory and reporting stay usable.
Apps have no OpenCart equivalent
Subscriptions, bundles, reviews or upsell data held inside Shopify apps needs to be exported separately, and replaced with an OpenCart extension or a custom build. We list these before quoting so there are no surprises.
Checkout and payments change hands
Shopify Payments does not travel. OpenCart needs its own payment and shipping extensions configured and tested, including tax rules and any local gateways.
URL and redirect planning
We build a full old-to-new URL map for products, collections, pages and blog posts, then implement 301s on the new store so rankings and backlinks carry over.
Hosting, performance and backups
Self-hosting means you own uptime. We advise on server sizing for your catalog, enable OpenCart caching sensibly, and make sure a backup and rollback path exists before go-live.

Shopify to OpenCart migration FAQ

Can you keep my Shopify product URLs on OpenCart?

Not identically — OpenCart does not use Shopify's /products/ and /collections/ prefixes. What we do instead is keep your slugs where possible and add 301 redirects from every old Shopify URL to its new OpenCart equivalent, so search engines and existing links follow the move.

Will customer passwords work after the migration?

No platform can migrate password hashes between Shopify and OpenCart. Customer accounts, addresses and order history move across; we set up a password-reset flow and, if you want, a short email announcement so returning customers know what to expect on first login.

What happens to my Shopify apps?

App data is not part of the Shopify export, so during discovery we inventory every app you rely on and check whether its data can be exported and whether an OpenCart extension covers the same job. Anything without an equivalent is flagged as a custom build or a change of process.

How much downtime does the cutover need?

Typically a short scheduled window — long enough to migrate the final delta of orders and customers and point DNS at the new store. The bulk of the work happens on a staging OpenCart install while Shopify keeps selling.
