Moving from OpenCart to Shopify
Most OpenCart to Shopify projects are driven by the same thing: the store works, but maintaining PHP, extensions and server updates has become the bottleneck. The migration itself is mainly a modelling exercise — turning OpenCart's category tree, option sets and customer groups into Shopify collections, variants and customer tags.
Shopify's constraints matter here. Three options per product and a 100-variant default limit mean some OpenCart products with many option combinations need rethinking, either as separate products, as line-item properties, or with a variant app. We identify those products during discovery, not on launch day.

These are the differences that decide how your new store is structured. We settle each one with you during discovery, before any data moves.
- Shopify's variant ceiling
- OpenCart lets you stack many option groups on one product. Shopify allows three options per product and limits variants per product. We report affected products up front and recommend a split, a metafield, or an app.
- Options that are really specifications
- OpenCart attributes and some options describe the product rather than offering a choice. Those belong in Shopify metafields and spec tables, not variants — this keeps your product pages clean and filterable.
- Multi-store decisions
- An OpenCart multi-store setup can become Shopify Markets, multiple storefronts or one catalog. We pick the model based on currencies, languages, catalog overlap and how you want to run operations.
- Customer groups and pricing rules
- Group-specific pricing and tax exemptions have no direct Shopify equivalent on the standard plan. We map them to customer tags with a discount or B2B setup, and document exactly what behaviour changes.
- SEO URLs and redirects
- OpenCart SEO URLs and index.php?route= links both need handling. We build the redirect map into Shopify's URL redirect system, including category, product, information and manufacturer pages.

OpenCart to Shopify migration FAQ
My OpenCart products have many option combinations. Will they fit Shopify?
Sometimes not as-is. Shopify allows three options per product with a variant cap, so products beyond that are restructured — commonly split into related products, moved to custom line-item properties, or handled by a variant app. We give you the affected product list and a recommendation before the migration starts.
Can you migrate my OpenCart order history?
Yes. Orders, line items, totals, statuses and customer links are migrated so support and reporting continue to work. Historical orders come across as records — they are not re-processed through payment or fulfilment.
What about my OpenCart SEO URLs?
We keep handles as close to your existing SEO URLs as Shopify's path structure allows and add 301 redirects for products, categories and information pages. Where you have both SEO URLs and index.php?route= URLs indexed, both are covered.
Do I need to rebuild my theme?
Your OpenCart theme cannot be ported. Most stores start from a Shopify theme close to their current design and adjust it. We focus on the data migration and coordinate with whoever builds the theme so both land together.
